Playa El Mago - Balearic Islands |
| Author: Ray Getzinger 9/29/2002 |
One Beach I have spent at least two weeks a year for the past several years is Playa El Mago on the island of Majorca (Mallorca) in the Spanish Balearic Islands.
The beach is sandstone rather than sand. There is a wonderful seafood restaurant right on the beach. It is a cove surrounded by steep cliffs with a wonderful view of the Mediterranean on one side. The water is deep enough to dive right off the sandstone shelf and clear enough to see all the way to the bottom.
Snorkling and diving take place in the area. I am not a diver, but there seems to be diving every day in the summer.
On Sundays I have counted up to 200 boats anchored in the cove and several large yachts in as close as they can get with owners either sun bathing on the decks or jet skiing into the beach. There is a place to tie a boat at the edge of the sandstone shelf. I saw one family tie up so their friends could board the boat and then they went out to anchor for a picnic.
Across the cove is a topless beach called Portal Vells. At Portal Vells there are caves in the sides of the cliffs that people explore while on the beach. The whole area above the cliffs is forested and it is fun to walk the trails. There are picnic tables at convenient places along the trail.
Around the corner from El Mago above the cliffs are some condominiums. Many of the residents come down from the condos nude to enjoy the beach.
The beach is located to the south of Magaluf containing the island's only casino and along with Palma Nova nearby are populated with Germans and British so if you are deficient in Spanish you can speak German or English. There is a water theme park just outside Magaluf, then there is a 3 wheel motorcycle rental place and lawn bowling club. Further on there is a challenging golf course that is mostly an uphill course that is great exercise if you walk it. The signs all say Portal Vells until you get to the turn off for El Mago with the main road continuing on to Portal Vells.
You need to be in good physical condition to get down to the beach if you are not one of the fortunate few able to get a parking place at the bottom of the hill.
I forgot to mention that the island is famous for the best cultured pearls in Europe. The largest city is Palma de Mallorca. The island has many more things to offer than a nude vacation. The Spanish like to party late at night. On New Year's 2000 there was a free outdoor rock concert that broke up at 3 AM and from there people went to the clubs to spend the rest of the night. There were still people out at 6 AM when I went back to my ship. There are windmills on the farms that look like the ones in Holland. The island is beautiful. There are more nude beaches, I just happen to like El Mago.
